The Young Illustrators workshop consists of:

  • A talk about the process of illustrating a picture book, including the importance of doing photo research and how to get ideas from your family history.
  • Exercises that help students find clues in the words of a story, to come up with picture ideas, using my books as a model.
  • A four-panel display highlighting the steps involved in making the art in a picture book. I show the line drawings, thumbnail sketches, photos and painted papers actually used in creating my books.
  • An art demonstration of my cut-paper collage technique, that allows students to see me drawing images and cutting out and pasting down the art.
  • A special hands-on project for a limited numbers of students (maximum 30), where they actually get a chance to illustrate a passage from a book, using the cut-paper collage technique.

I liked the way it gave the children an overview of how books are made. Having a hands-on experience was a good chance for children to do art.
